Jean van Marcke de Lummen (1797-1849) mare with foal, dating from the early 1800s. Charming and small decorative oil painting on panel depicting a mare with a foal. Signed in the lower left corner with Jean van Marcke; he was a Belgian painter born in Brussels and died in Liège. He was part of a well-known family of artists. For instance, he was the father of the famous cattle painter Émile van Marcke. Other family members, such as Edouard Jean van Marcke, were also active as artists. The painting is somewhat soiled and has developed craquelure over the centuries.
