Exceptional Desk designed and crafted by Jean Joly – an expressive unique piece on the border between furniture art, sculpture, and traditional French cabinetmaking.
The Desk fundamentally differs from serially produced design furniture. Particularly characteristic is the sculpturally constructed base made of stacked, book-like wooden elements. This form is not merely decorative: it directly refers to Jean Joly's intensive engagement with history, craftsmanship, documentation, and the transmission of knowledge.
The piece is signed "J. JOLY" and has been clearly attributed to Jean Joly. Its history and rediscovery have since been documented. The Desk was publicly presented in France in connection with a Jean Joly exhibition; this very piece is also depicted with several detailed photographs in the accompanying exhibition documents.
Jean Joly – Cabinetmaker, Sculptor, Draughtsman, and Researcher
Jean Joly was born in 1923 in Bozouls, Aveyron. After the Second World War, he went to Paris and initially focused on wood sculpture. In the 1950s, he trained at the renowned École Boulle and took drawing lessons at the Ateliers de la Ville de Paris.
After returning to Rodez, he founded his own business with his wife Christiane. Joly worked as an Ébéniste, Sculpteur, and Dessinateur – as a cabinetmaker, sculptor, and draughtsman. His workshop produced high-quality furniture according to individual designs; at times, his company employed a specialized team of about fifteen employees.
In addition, Joly was intensely committed to the preservation and transmission of artisanal traditions. Among other things, he was active in the Chambre des Métiers and was honored for his work, including as Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Palmes Académiques.
His interests extended far beyond furniture production. For decades, he collected, documented, and drew historical furniture, tools, and objects from European everyday and craft history.
In 1992, his extensive work was published:
"Préhistoire du Mobilier – des origines au XVe siècle"
The preface was written by Daniel Alcouffe, then Inspecteur Général des Musées and responsible for the Département des Objets d’Art of the Musée du Louvre. Alcouffe particularly praises Joly's systematic research method and his extraordinary graphic documentation of historical furniture.
This connection of craftsmanship, sculpture, research, and book culture is directly reflected in the offered Desk.
