Product description
This is an authentic Japanese Tansu chest of drawers, dating from the Meiji period, circa 1880. The piece exemplifies the traditional craftsmanship of Japanese cabinet-making, designed as a two-part stacking chest, known as a kasane-dansu, for versatility and transport.
Constructed from indigenous Japanese wood, the chest features a warm, natural finish that highlights the grain. It is adorned with extensive hand-forged iron hardware, including distinctive 'warabite' bail handles, decorative lock plates, and protective corner bracing. This combination of natural wood and dark metal is a hallmark of Tansu design, providing both structural integrity and a strong visual contrast. The asymmetrical arrangement of drawers and a small cupboard with a locking bar adds to its functional character.
The chest is presented in a condition consistent with its considerable age, displaying a rich and honest patina developed over more than a century. The surfaces show signs of a long life and history, which contribute to its unique character as an antique. All drawers and compartments appear to be original and functional.
As a substantial and historic piece of furniture, this Tansu offers significant storage and serves as a powerful focal point. It integrates well into interiors that appreciate artisanal history, from Wabi-Sabi and minimalist aesthetics to eclectic and modern spaces, providing both utility and a deep sense of heritage.
