Product description
This is an antique Japanese Tansu chest of drawers, dating from the Meiji period, circa 1870. The piece exemplifies traditional Japanese cabinet-making, combining functional storage with a distinct aesthetic defined by its natural wood and robust iron hardware. Crafted in Japan, this Tansu is constructed from a light-toned wood, showcasing a prominent grain. It is distinguished by its extensive, hand-forged iron hardware, including decorative lock plates, corner reinforcements, and 'warabite' style drawer pulls. The chest is designed in two stackable sections, offering versatility in its arrangement. The lower section features a combination of drawers and a small, hinged security compartment, a characteristic feature of Tansu design. The chest is in a good, antique condition, consistent with its age of over 150 years. It retains a rich, authentic patina on both the wood surfaces and the iron fittings, which contributes significantly to its historical character and visual appeal. The piece appears to be in its original state, without major restorations. As a versatile piece of furniture, this Tansu can serve as a unique chest of drawers in a bedroom, a statement storage cabinet in a living area, or be separated into two low sideboards. Its design complements interiors with Asian, rustic, or eclectic influences, adding a sense of history and craftsmanship to the space. There is minor damage to one of the drawers (at the corners). The bottom of the three handles on the small door has broken off, though it remains fully functional.
