Product description
This Japanese Tansu chest of drawers, produced circa 1870, represents a classic example of traditional East Asian cabinetry. The piece is defined by its robust wooden construction and distinctive iron hardware, which are characteristic of the Meiji period's utilitarian yet refined aesthetic.
Crafted from solid wood with a rich brown finish, the chest features a configuration of four full-width drawers and two smaller lower compartments, one secured by a traditional iron lock plate. The ironwork extends to the corner brackets and the sturdy side carrying handles, which were historically designed to facilitate transport. The natural grain of the wood is visible throughout, particularly on the unvarnished back panel, highlighting the authentic materials used in its construction.
The chest remains in fully functional condition, preserving its historical character and structural integrity. The original finish displays a deep patina that has developed over more than a century of use.
This Tansu chest serves as a striking storage solution that introduces historical depth to contemporary interiors. It pairs exceptionally well with minimalist, rustic, or eclectic decor, functioning as a focal point in a bedroom, living area, or hallway.
