Product description
This Japanese Tansu chest of drawers, produced circa 1870, exemplifies the functional elegance of traditional East Asian cabinetry. The piece is defined by its robust wooden construction and the distinctive iron hardware that characterises the Tansu form, originally designed for mobile storage in Japanese households.
Crafted from solid wood with a rich, dark brown finish, the chest features a configuration of five full-width drawers above a lower section containing two smaller drawers and a secure compartment. The ironwork includes corner reinforcements, decorative lock plates, and sturdy carrying handles on the sides, all finished in a patinated black that contrasts with the warm tones of the wood. The piece retains its original structural integrity and the characteristic aesthetic of the Meiji period.
The chest remains in good condition, displaying a characterful patina consistent with its age and historical use. The original finish has been preserved, highlighting the natural grain of the wood and the authentic wear that adds to its historical value.
This Tansu chest serves as a striking focal point in both traditional and contemporary interiors. Its versatile storage capacity and historical provenance make it an excellent addition to a bedroom, living area, or hallway, pairing well with minimalist or eclectic decor schemes.
