Product description
This early 20th-century Japanese bronze is built around a closed, triangular composition. The widely splayed knees, upright torso, and compact head shape give the small statue a strikingly sturdy presence. The Buddha sits in meditation with hands placed one above the other in the lap. This Dhyana Mudra forms the serene focal point of the depiction. The face is soberly sculpted: half-closed eyes, a short nose, a small mouth, and a round urna on the forehead. The hair consists of a regular grid of block-shaped curls. Striking is the linear pattern of the drapery. Narrow folds run from the shoulders to the chest and return in wider arcs over the lap. Green oxidation primarily follows these incised areas; the higher surfaces show a dark reddish-brown patina. As a result, both the form and age remain clearly discernible simultaneously.
