Japanese cast iron tōrō temple lantern Dimensions: H 25 × W 25 cm Weight: 3.6 kg Material: Cast iron Period: First half 20th century Origin: Japan Object: Tōrō / garden and temple lantern Description Compact Japanese lantern in the shape of a traditional tōrō, made of heavy cast iron. The four-sided light chamber has openwork windows and a hinged door, with the original holder for a candle or other light source inside. The broad pagoda roof has strongly upturned corners and is topped by a stepped finial. A metal carrying handle and chain are part of the construction. The surface has a pronounced dark brown to rust-brown patina, consistent with prolonged exposure and use. Construction and condition The lantern consists of multiple cast and assembled iron parts. The door is still present and functions via its original hinge construction. Visible oxidation, rust, surface weathering, and signs of use are part of its current condition and character.
