Condition: In good condition, never framed. Total dimensions: 120×80×0.2 cm. Image size: 111 x 77 cm. Jan Cremer trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Arnhem. He lived and worked in Amsterdam. Even at a young age, Jan Cremer was an extremely original and driven artist, willing to do anything to be able to work. At his first solo exhibition at Galerie De Posthoorn in The Hague in 1958, critics—hardly recovered from the riots surrounding CoBrA—spoke of a 'wild beast'. His participation in the Hague Salon (1958) became a scandal. A year later, he exhibited at the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague, and in 1960 at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. Meanwhile, Cremer worked on his first book, *Ik Jan Cremer*, which was published in the Netherlands in 1964 and has since been published in millions of copies in many languages. During the same period, more than a hundred exhibitions of his visual art followed in museums and galleries both at home and abroad. With the first proceeds from his book, Jan Cremer left for America at the end of 1964. In New York, he began painting Dutch landscapes. This very colorful and, above all, tightly composed ‘Dutch Realism’, featuring cows, farm women, and tulip fields, represents a break with the strongly abstract expressionist work of the preceding years. The theme of Dutch landscapes recurs throughout Cremer’s entire oeuvre, but the steppes, deserts, and mountain ranges of Siberia and Mongolia—regions he frequently travels through—are also a permanent source of inspiration. In between, he stays for shorter or longer periods in Berlin, London, or Amsterdam, where he primarily produces lithographs. In 1972, Cremer produced his first documentary film, 'The Long White Trail', about his expedition with the Inuit in Northwest Greenland. As a reporter, he traveled the world extensively. Cremer managed to combine his work with his wanderlust. He was on the road for six months a year; during the other months, he divided his time between painting and writing, preferably in the South of France or Switzerland. Jan Cremer passed away on June 19, 2024, at the age of 84.
