In a landscape bathed in greens and light, a woman has stopped at the foot of a monumental tree, her basket placed beside her. Behind her stretches a village with small white houses, while a vine laden with grapes occupies one entire side of the composition. A peaceful, almost timeless rural scene, characteristic of the world of Croatian naive art. This work is signed Ivo Cenkovčan and dated 1982. Born in 1949 in Molve, northern Croatia, the artist belongs to this region, which became one of the emblematic territories of Croatian naive painting during the 20th century. His work is part of an artistic tradition deeply rooted in the rural world, its villages, agricultural work, landscapes, and the rhythm of the seasons. Cenkovčan develops an immediately recognizable universe where nature often plays a considerable role. Trees with powerful silhouettes, abundant vegetation, paths, houses, and figures compose meticulous landscapes whose apparent simplicity gives way to a multitude of small details. His career notably led him to exhibit in Hlebine, another major historical site for Croatian naive art. This piece is a print made on metal foil, a decorative technique particularly popular during this period. The silvery support remains visible under certain parts of the image and gives the greens, foliage, and sky luminous effects that change with the lighting. Preserved in its antique frame, with a brown molding and silver fillet, it bears some traces of time on the frame and on the reverse, without detracting from the appreciation of the work.
