This richly decorated wooden chest is a striking example of traditional Asian woodcarving. The piece of furniture combines functional storage space with a highly detailed, narrative aesthetic characteristic of Oriental craftsmanship.
The chest is crafted from solid teak wood, as indicated on the original plaque on the inside ('Genuine Teakwood, Made in Taiwan'). The design features deeply carved reliefs depicting dynamic scenes of warriors on horseback and traditional landscapes. The edges feature a classic meander motif, and the lid displays graceful dragon figures. A glass plate protects the woodcarving on the top. The chest is fitted with a copper-colored, decorative padlock and hinges. Inside, there is a removable wooden tray for smaller objects.
The furniture is in good condition, commensurate with its age and use. The wood has developed a warm, dark brown patina that accentuates the depth of the carving.
