Product description
This 19th-century Indian bronze Ratnasambhava is designed as a small, freestanding shrine. The Buddha sits centrally before a large oval nimbus, on a double lotus above a raised four-legged plinth. A domed parasol on curved supports crowns the composition. Ratnasambhava is recognizable by the downward-facing open right hand in varada mudra, the gesture of generosity. The left hand rests in the lap and holds a small jewel-shaped attribute. The slender frontal body, strict symmetry, and monumental backplate refer to sculptural types from eastern India under the Pala dynasty, executed here in a 19th-century Pala Revival style. The framing determines the character of the sculpture. A beaded border follows the nimbus, surrounded by an undulating flame or leaf frieze. The raised parasol and its openwork supports give the depiction additional height; the double lotus and architectural plinth create a sturdy, almost shrine-like silhouette.

Surface and Casting
The open underside reveals the hollow cast construction of the base. The metal has a layered golden-brown to dark-brown surface, with orange-red deposits in recessed areas. Localized pitting from corrosion is visible on the front; the reverse shows old casting marks, discolorations, and several irregular openings in the backplate.
Condition
The sculpture shows clear signs of age and use, including wear, scratches, encrustation, and localized corrosion pits. Small material losses and openings are present, including on the nimbus, lotus, backplate, and plinth; the feet and corners of the base also show wear and minor damage.
