About the Manufacturer
VEB Ilm-Kristall, based in Ilmenau, was one of the leading producers of artistic and decorative glass in the German Democratic Republic. Renowned for its richly coloured overlay crystal and precision cutting, the factory continued Central European glassmaking traditions while developing distinctive modern designs that remain highly sought after by collectors of twentieth-century glass.
Design
The modular silhouette is composed of stacked circular elements that create a rhythmic architectural profile, enhanced by deeply cut vertical facets that animate the rich ruby overlay. As light passes through the crystal, the saturated colour shifts between deep garnet and luminous crimson, while the clear lower layer produces remarkable optical effects. Displayed together, the two vases create a harmonious composition that emphasises proportion, repetition, and colour.
The design recalls geometric forms associated with the Viennese Secession and the work of Josef Hoffmann, whose architectural vocabulary inspired numerous later glass manufacturers. Similar interpretations were produced by Carl Melzer & Co. and subsequently explored by Bohemian and East German glassworks. While this model is frequently associated with that design tradition, no documented designer attribution for the Ilm-Kristall production is known.

Whether displayed as a pair or individually, these vases create a strong visual statement through their sculptural geometry and saturated colour. They pair beautifully with smoked glass, walnut, chrome, travertine, and other mid-century furnishings, while their architectural forms also complement contemporary and minimalist interiors. Even without flowers, they function as elegant optical sculptures.
