René Binet (1866-1911) created the monumental gate on the Place de la Concorde for the 1900 Universal Exhibition in Paris, and the reconstruction of the Printemps department stores. In his masterful work "Decorative Sketches," he explains his approach, inspired by Goethe's "Theory of Colors" and the work of the German biologist Ernst Haeckel.
