Mixed media on stretched canvas, framed, 84 × 120 cm, 2026. Part of an ongoing series (2000–2024) exploring how lived landscape experience can become an experience of painting for both artist and viewer. Inspired by the Pyrenees and the coastal and moorland landscapes of West Penwith, Cornwall, the work begins from memory. Ash, bitumen, and layered material processes accumulate on the surface so that making becomes central, allowing the painting to form a new experience beyond recollection. Living in Ariège since 2016, my work takes a phenomenological approach to mountain landscape. Earlier research in Cornwall (PhD 2014) explored how the physical demands of bouldering inform visual representation and performance in art. The work is shipped on a stretcher; surface marks, drips, and cracks are integral to the process.
