Presented here is an example of the BKF chair, an iconic design of 20th-century furniture. This piece, also known as the Butterfly Chair, is renowned for its sculptural silhouette that combines a minimalist structure with a suspended leather seat. The design was conceived in 1938 by architects Antonio Bonet, Juan Kurchan, and Jorge Ferrari Hardoy in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The chair consists of a black leather cover, constructed from four sewn panels, which rests on a black-finished metal rod structure. Its lightweight and ergonomic design made it a classic of modern design, becoming part of MoMA's permanent collection since 1941.
Provenance and Quality: This piece was originally acquired from the prestigious design furniture firm La Oca in Madrid in the late 1990s. Its origin guarantees the excellent production standards of the era, evident in the density of its solid rod and the robustness of the leather panels, far superior to current mass industrial reproductions.
Technical Details and Condition: Metal Structure: Solid, firm, and completely stable. The cross welds are in perfect condition and it has its original lower rubber protectors to prevent floor damage. Leather Cover (Front): Maintains excellent structural integrity, offering a comfortable and enveloping seat. It shows the genuine patina and character that leather acquires over time, with a uniform sheen and natural light use creases. Leather Cover (Reverse and Edges): As an authentically vintage piece with history, the reverse of the leather shows logical wear from flexing, and the perimeter edge has a small superficial mark/micro-fissure on the outer hem that is purely aesthetic and does not compromise its use (all duly documented in the attached photos).
