Jan Verschaeren was originally a Mechelen artist, born in 1904 and died in 1985. He was a painter and etcher who received his training (1914) at the age of 10 from the Mechelen painter Victor Plaquet. In 1919, he began his training at the Ottevaere Portael School in Vilvoorde. He also worked in Brussels. Sporadically, he was also a sculptor. His subjects were primarily landscapes, village scenes, portraits, still lifes, and flowers.
