Original wood engraving or woodcut by the French artist and illustrator Ferdinand Dubreuil (1894–1972), who frequently depicted the life and work of miners and laborers. Reverse side label art dealer Gus Alberts.
Characteristics of the work:
• Technique: Wood engraving or woodcut on paper in a black frame with a passe-partout.
• Depiction: An industrial worker or miner scene with miners/workers in helmets and work clothes in the foreground and factory chimneys/industrial buildings in the background.
• Artist: Ferdinand Dubreuil (as recognizable by the signature in the lower right and the characteristic style of his engravings about the mining region / Bourbonnais).
This is an original wood engraving by the French artist Ferdinand Dubreuil, dating from the first half of the 20th century. The work is a powerful example of social realism and depicts a scene of miners against an industrial landscape, a theme characteristic of that period.
The print is executed in the wood engraving technique on paper, resulting in strong, graphic lines and high contrast between black and white. The work is signed in the plate in the lower right with the artist's initials, "F.D.". The engraving is professionally framed in a simple black wooden frame, accented by a cream-colored, textured passe-partout. A label on the back from the art dealer and framer Gus Alberts from Heerlen testifies to the origin of the framing.
The artwork is in good condition, consistent with its age. The print itself is well preserved, with sharp details and no visible discoloration. The frame shows light signs of wear that contribute to the authentic character of the piece and reflect its history.
This wood engraving is a characterful piece that adds a historical and narrative element to an interior. It fits perfectly in a setting with industrial, classic or minimalist influences, for example in a study, library or as part of an art wall.
