An expressive “Hosepipe Chair” designed by Dutch designer Sander Bokkinga for BOK in 2008. This example is one of only four produced. Constructed entirely from original yellow plastic hosepipe, the chair transforms an ordinary industrial material into a playful yet highly sculptural seating object.
The continuous tubular form twists, loops, and knots around itself, creating both the structure and visual identity of the piece. Despite its spontaneous appearance, the composition is carefully balanced, with the intertwined hosepipe forming an unexpectedly stable and functional construction.
The bright yellow surface reinforces the chair’s bold and unconventional character, while the visible connectors and fittings subtly reference the material’s original utilitarian purpose. The design balances humour, experimentation, and engineering in a distinctly Dutch conceptual approach.
Blurring the boundary between functional object and sculptural statement, the “Hosepipe Chair” stands as a compelling example of contemporary collectible design from the early 21st century.
