The Jewish lady depicted is the Dutch actress Esther de Boer-Van Rijk (Rotterdam, July 29, 1853 – Amsterdam, September 7, 1937), who played Kniertje in ‘Op hoop van zegen’. On the occasion of her 70th birthday in 1923, the Municipality of Amsterdam appointed her a 'citizen of merit' and she received a silver honorary medal. On October 16, 1928, she was honored at the Stadsschouwburg on her 75th birthday and was made a Knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau. In 1929, she was also made a Knight in the Order of the Crown of Belgium. Her memoirs "Ik kijk terug" (I Look Back) were published in 1934.
