Private sellerProduct description
This is a Fledermaus chair, an iconic design by Josef Hoffmann, produced by the Austrian manufacturer Wittmann. The piece is an important example of the Wiener Werkstätte movement and combines functionality with the geometric elegance characteristic of Hoffmann's work. Originally designed in 1907 for the Cabaret Fledermaus in Vienna, this model is a classic in design history.
The chair is made of black lacquered wood, which accentuates its sculptural form and distinctive spherical details. The frame features a unique sled base that transitions into the backrest and armrests. The seat is upholstered, and the chair comes with two upholstery options: one in a neutral brown fabric and another with a world map motif, allowing the look to be customized. Authenticity is confirmed by the manufacturer's metal plate. The plate is missing on two of the four chairs.
The overall condition of the chair is fair to good, with a character that matches its age and history. The original lacquer shows a patina that emphasizes the vintage character of the furniture piece. The structure is solid, and the chair retains its original form and design intent. The dark upholstery is the original, and for the other three, a different motif was applied later.
This Fledermaus chair is a versatile piece that can function as a dining chair, desk chair, or as a standalone design object. It fits well into interiors ranging from classic and Art Deco to modern and eclectic, where it adds a touch of Viennese design history.
