Van Vessem (Rotterdam 1939) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rotterdam from 1959 to 1962. Van Vessem held his first exhibition in 1968 at De Doelen in Rotterdam. He was a co-initiator of several institutions. For instance, in 1973 he co-founded the Open Kunst Foundation, which aims to facilitate workshops and courses for professional artists, and in 1978, together with a number of others, he founded Grafisch Atelier Rijnmond. Throughout the rest of his career, Van Vessem was also involved in many initiatives, such as Wendrich Art Editions, De Lijn, and a graphic workshop called Orion for the intellectually disabled. In 1983, Van Vessem participated in Art Basel. He has traveled to and temporarily resided in France, New York, India, and Spain, among other places.
Van Vessem's work has been exhibited both domestically and internationally. In 1999, he had a retrospective exhibition at the Jan van der Togt Museum in Amstelveen, where he received the Order of Knighthood at the opening.
