Henk van der Vet
• Name: Henk van der Vet

• Discipline: photographer, graphic artist – he calls himself a “photographic artist”
He became best known for his own technique which he calls “photographics”: a combination of photography with graphic techniques such as screen printing, montage and trickery. So photos are edited, overprinted, combined – very experimental and typical of the 70s/80s.
Precisely because he was so good in that graphic field, there have been many collaborations with famous artists. In his studio, Karel Appel, Bram Bogart, Co Westerik, Kees van Bohemen, Tabuchi and others worked with him on screen prints. With Karel Appel, for example, he made the album “Seven Summer Days” in 1977, where Appel painted over his photos.
In the 80s and 90s, he also designed many screen prints with technical and industrial themes (airplanes, bridges, platforms, World Trade Center, etc.), and he exhibited these in places like the Waldorf Astoria and the World Trade Center in New York. In 1992, he received the National Painting Prize for color designs and murals in a factory hall.
This painting
In literature, he is mainly mentioned as a photographer/graphic artist, not specifically as a “painter”, but that certainly does not exclude the possibility that he also made oil paintings in the 60s – this work from 1968 fits perfectly into his early career in terms of period. The signature “H. v.d. Vet ’68” and the address label in Leiden confirm the attribution, Parkstraat 33, Leiden (then current residential address).
In short: an early, painted work by an artist who later became primarily known for experimental photography and collaborations with big names.
