A medieval tower of beige sandstone rises in the center of the composition, dominating a group of lower urban buildings with arcaded facades and pronounced horizontal lines. The whole stands out against a turquoise blue sky rendered by glass paste tesserae with shifting reflections. In the lower left, a few dark tesserae evoke the vegetation of the surrounding hills. The scene is inspired by medieval Tuscan architecture, of which the fortified towns and their noble towers are the most characteristic expression. The mosaic is made of hard stones and glass paste, using the traditional Italian technique. The tesserae are laid flat, the joints highlighted by fine colored lines – yellow, red, blue, and green – which punctuate the composition and give it a graphic energy akin to Cubism. This type of framed mosaic was produced in Italy in the 1950s-1970s by artisans trained in Roman and Florentine mosaic techniques, for a market of collectors and discerning travelers. The gilded wooden frame with a molded profile is original to the period, with natural signs of age. The back is cardboard with a metal hanging hook, ready to hang.
