About the artist: Hans WAP (Rotterdam 1943) Painter, Poet, Graphic artist Education: Hans Wap received his education at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam. Rotterdam Hans Wap is an important contemporary Dutch artist who works from Rotterdam, where he also lives. His work characterizes the central figure, constantly searching within the hectic environment of contemporary existence. Hans Wap's visual language is so simple that it might raise some suspicion. Is this really art? Perhaps it is more meaningful to ask: What strikes us in the primary symbolism of Native Americans, Aboriginals, and Papuans? Why has modern art reverted to this since Picasso? The answer is simple: one is overwhelmed by signals on the street. The more complicated the world, the stronger the need for simple visual symbolism. Hans Wap's linocuts recall primary prototypes formed in childhood. Many small airplanes appear in the work—planes crashing into a chair leg in the living room or into the high-heeled shoes of the 'femme fatale'. Wap works extensively with linoleum; the airplane is the symbol of the journey Wap makes through the (new) material. Wap does not wish to work entirely abstractly; there are always figurative elements in the work. He says he can express himself better figuratively. In his more recent work, in addition to the form, the coincidences brought about by cutting into the linoleum are important. Wap does not present ready-made objects; there is room for imagination. He creates abstract planes containing strange shapes, which, according to him, allow the viewer a great deal of freedom.
