Sales Information – Hans Epp (1925–1985) Artist: Hans Epp Date: 1968 Technique: Mixed media on paper Dimensions: 32 cm x 23.5 cm Signature: Signed lower right Presentation: Artwork sold framed, dark wood frame Description of the work: This composition is distinguished by its subtle and evocative visual language. The organic forms, fragmented and freely arranged on the pictorial space, establish a dialogue between abstraction and figurative suggestion. The palette, nuanced with browns, ochres, and blacks, is enlivened by controlled contrasts and textural effects that enhance the visual depth. The graphic elements seem to float in a silent space, lending the whole a meditative and dreamlike dimension. The balance between the spontaneity of the gesture and the rigor of the composition reveals perfect technical mastery. This work aptly illustrates Epp's exploration of the relationship between form, psyche, and perception, a central theme in his artistic reflection. Artist Biography Born on March 12, 1925, in Vienna, Hans Epp grew up in a European context marked by profound historical changes. In 1942, his family emigrated to Switzerland, finding refuge in Zurich during the Second World War. He continued his studies at the Zurich School of Fine Arts, where he absorbed modern movements and developed a sensibility influenced by major figures such as Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee. His work fused abstract expressionism and surrealism, giving rise to a visual universe of bold geometric forms, vibrant colors, and highly poetic compositions. From the 1950s onward, he exhibited in Zurich, Paris, and Berlin. His work received favorable critical acclaim, praising its originality and formal audacity. In 1957, he was awarded the Kandinsky Prize, a recognition that solidified his international reputation. Alongside his painting, Hans Epp published essays on the links between art and the human psyche. Settling in Montreux in the 1970s, he taught and influenced a new generation of artists. He died in Zurich on October 18, 1985, leaving behind a body of work now held in museums and private collections in Europe and internationally.
