There is an energy in certain popular ceramics that industrial manufacturers have never been able to reproduce. This is a beautiful example of that. This large glazed terracotta wall plate is entirely covered with an intense cobalt blue background on which a swirling concentric slipware decoration, in green, ochre, white, and brown, unfolds. The spiral motifs are organized in successive circles around a radiant center, framed by a wavy border with repetitive elements. The reverse side, made of glazed red terracotta, is equipped with its original hanging hook. This type of artisanal production is characteristic of popular pottery workshops in the Balkans and Central Europe, particularly Bulgarian or Romanian ones, which kept ancestral decorative traditions alive throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Each piece was handmade, with subtle variations from one example to another. Hung on a white wall, this plate catches the light and enlivens the space with a colorful and warm presence. It fits equally well in a contemporary interior or in a decoration inspired by folk art or travel. Condition as shown in photographs, visible signs of wear, no major chips.
