Product description
A Keshan rug no. 2172 (also spelled Kashan) is a classic, hand-knotted Persian rug from the city of Kashan in central Iran, which has been an important center of carpet art for centuries.
Typical characteristics of a Keshan carpet:
Origin: Kashan (Iran), one of the oldest and most renowned carpet regions in Persia.
Materials: Usually made of high-quality sheep's wool, often refined with silk. The warp thread is often cotton, in finer examples also silk.
Weave: Very fine Persian weave, knot density often between 200,000 and over 1,000,000 knots per m².
Pattern: Typical is a central medallion (often round or oval) on a richly ornamented field.
Color palette: Classic colors are dark red, blue, beige, ivory; often with contrasting borders.
Border: Multiple layers, with floral motifs and tendril patterns.
Motifs: Arabesques, flowers, tendrils, sometimes figurative depictions (in very old pieces).
