The Gashgai are Turkic-speaking nomadic tribes known for their handmade kilims - reversible, flat-woven wool rugs traditionally woven by women with great care and craftsmanship. Each kilim is a unique work of art, lovingly crafted by hand using the special slitting technique, in which small openings create harmonious color gradients. The artistic patterns feature classic Gashgai motifs such as diamonds, squares, stripes and the characteristic Caucasian star motif. Bright colors such as blue, yellow, red, green and beige are masterfully interwoven and reflect not only the outstanding craftsmanship of the weavers, but also the rich cultural heritage that has been passed down through generations of Gashgai women.
