La Bisbal d'Empordà is today one of the most important ceramic centers in Catalonia (Spain). The first documented evidence of pottery-making in this region dates back to 1502, but it was during the second half of the 19th century that La Bisbal ceramics enjoyed its golden age, and its pottery was marketed not only in Catalonia, but also in Spain's overseas colonies.
In the mid-twentieth century, the emergence and development of new materials such as plastic, steel, etc. meant that these ceramic objects lost the function for which they had been created, and were transformed into essentially decorative objects. Ceramic production is becoming increasingly industrialized and the number of craftsmen is dwindling, but there are still artisan workshops like Josep Torres', the fruit of a family heritage of craftsmen dedicated to ceramic production.
That's why this tile is a work of art. All pieces sold in our store are antique or vintage and may show some wear and signs of age. Please enlarge the photos to judge the condition of the item according to your own criteria. Our items are unique, so sales are subject to availability. 17*25
