Gabbeh rugs are handmade by nomadic weavers and were originally used for sleeping as they are particularly warm due to their higher pile. The irregular, hand-spun wool, which is rich in lanolin, gives Gabbeh rugs their typical grainy surface structure. Many rugs feature natural tones such as cream, brown and grey, while vibrant colors such as red, yellow, green and blue are created with vegetable dyes. Gabbehs are often simple, depicting stylized motifs from the everyday life of nomads, such as goats, camels, dogs, plants and people.
