Product description
Design: after Guillame Coustou Dimensions: (height) 47 x (width) 42 x (depth) 18 cm Weight: 6800 grams Origin: France Material: cast bronze Period: 19th century Signed: yes Condition: good condition - minimal signs of wear Imposing large sculpture signed 'Coustou' after the original work of Carrara marble from the 18th century, which adorned the watering troughs of the Marly castle and can now be admired in the Louvre. The scene shows a rearing stallion, with difficulty held back by a stable boy. Refined work, showing the manes in the wind, the connected muscles, the fight they both seem to be waging. An ode to the wild beauty of the horse. This bronze sculpture is a 19th-century reproduction of the famous work 'Cheval de Marly' by the French sculptor Guillaume Coustou. The work depicts the dramatic struggle between an untamed horse and its tamer, an iconic sculpture from French art history. The original marble sculptures were completed in 1745 and mark the transition from the Baroque to Classicism. The sculpture is made of bronze with a dark patina, which accentuates the muscular forms and dynamic movement of both the horse and the man. The sculpture stands on an oval base that is part of the casting, and is mounted on a separate, black plinth. The signature 'COUSTOU' is clearly visible engraved in the base of the bronze, confirming the origin of the design. The overall condition of this antique piece is very good, in accordance with its age. The patina is largely intact and shows a character that can only be acquired through time. There are no clear signs of restoration, thus preserving the historical integrity of the object. With its powerful, classical appearance, this sculpture is a refined addition to an interior with a love for art history. It fits perfectly on a dresser, in a library or on a console, where it forms a point of cultural and aesthetic interest. When shipped, the item will be carefully packed to prevent damage.
