Product description
This is an impressive work by him. The painting, titled (or characterized by) a mix of techniques such as papier-mâché on linen, has a very pronounced tactile quality that is typical of his style.
Here are a few striking aspects of this particular piece:
1. Texture and Material
The use of papier-mâché on an aluminum frame gives the work a 3D effect. The deep grooves and the heavy, impasto-like texture catch the light in a way that a flat painting cannot. This creates a lively dynamic, where the shadows in the relief change as you walk around it.
2. Use of Color and Symbolism
Contrast: The fiery red and orange hues of the central figure literally pop off the cooler, blue and purple background.
Focus: The large, yellow eyes immediately draw attention and give the figure an almost hypnotic, naive yet penetrating gaze. Composition: The figure is centered and fills a large part of the vertical plane (130 x 110 cm), giving the character a sense of presence and authority.
3. Style: CoBrA influences
The style is strongly reminiscent of the CoBrA movement (think of Appel or Corneille), characterized by:
Spontaneity.
The use of bright, unmixed colors.
A childlike, imaginative figuration that breaks free from classical academic rules.
Nice detail: In the photo, you can see the artist himself standing next to the work, which clearly indicates the scale. It is a substantial statement piece that feels both playful and monumental.
