Large oil on panel signed Rabier – La Corniche d’Or and the red rocks of the Estérel – First half of the 20th century, probably around 1920–1930.
Superb panoramic painting depicting the Mediterranean coastline of the Estérel massif, on the Côte d’Azur.
The composition is distinguished by expressive pictorial matter, generous impasto, and a luminous palette combining the reds and ochres of the rocks with the turquoise blues of the Mediterranean.
A remarkable historical detail: in the foreground, an old cobbled road bordered by a stone retaining wall evokes the famous Corniche d’Or, inaugurated in 1903. This representation could testify to the ancient appearance of this panoramic road.
The artwork bears the signature "Rabier" in red, at the bottom left.
An attribution to the French painter Gabriel Rabier (1884–1955) is considered. The artist stayed in Fréjus after being wounded during the First World War.
