Gouache on parchment “Geishas”, Qing Dynasty, circa 1780 – China
A stunning and exquisite Chinese vertical gouache, an original from the Qing Dynasty, depicting a pair of geisha. It portrays two elegantly dressed female figures in elaborate traditional costumes and sophisticated hairstyles, possibly court ladies or geisha. The background is a beautiful, deep, intense blue that could represent water or sky. A large rug in shades of brown features a stylized vegetal motif with several clumps of reeds. The work is set within a narrow gilded wooden frame and protected by glass. It is a traditional Asian painting, a vertical scroll, with a refined and detailed style, using a deep, brilliant blue as its background.
The Qing Dynasty (1644-1912) was the last imperial dynasty of China, ruled by the Manchus, an ethnic group that originated in northeastern China. This dynasty played a pivotal role in Chinese history, marking a period of significant territorial expansion, cultural exchange, and internal and external challenges that ultimately led to the end of the imperial system.
