Gouache "Day at the Beach," Clement Lambert (1855–1925) – United Kingdom
Exceptional gouache by the British painter Clement Lambert (1855–1925). The work depicts a scene of leisure and recreation, very typical of the early 20th century. In this case, a group of people seem to be enjoying a day at the beach. A spontaneous, almost Impressionist moment, focusing more on light and movement than on anatomical detail or portraiture. The tones are soft and muted, with a predominance of light blues, grays, and browns, with some brighter notes (for example, the central figure's red suit). The background is subtly blurred.
During the second half of the 19th century, scenes like this became very popular among British artists, influenced by French Impressionism and the rise of maritime recreation. Lambert, like so many of his contemporaries, was inspired by the ports and beaches of southern England.
Clement Lambert was a very prolific and popular artist. Although he almost always worked in watercolors, he also produced several oil paintings. His works generally depicted landscapes, rural or coastal scenes, and leisure activities. One of his works was sold at auction at Christie's. The signature "C. Lambert" can be seen in the lower right corner.
