The iconic Globe Wernicke bookcase, manufactured in England around 1890, is a masterpiece of modular furniture design. This specific piece, produced by the renowned furniture makers T.G. Woof Ltd. of Sheffield, represents the classic library style loved worldwide for its timeless elegance and ingenious construction.
The cabinet is constructed from solid mahogany and consists of four stackable elements, each featuring the characteristic hinged glass doors with brass knobs. The modular system, originally designed to keep books dust-free and facilitate easy relocation, is held together by sturdy metal bands on the sides. The warm brown tone of the wood highlights the rich grain and authentic craftsmanship of the late nineteenth century. Its provenance is documented with a purchase receipt from Van der Steen Antiquairs dating from 2012, underscoring the historical value of this piece of furniture.
The bookcase is in good, functional condition with a beautifully developed patina that bears witness to over a century of history.
