The Artist Is Almost Certainly Maurits (Maurice) Nevens (1929–2017), A Belgian Stained-Glass Artist Born In Dilbeek Who Later Worked From Lot, Belgium. The Flemish Heritage Authority Specifically Identifies Him As A Glazenier (Stained-Glass Artist) And Records That He Studied Monumental Arts, Trained In Stained Glass In Krefeld, Germany, And Studied With Oskar Kokoschka In Salzburg. The Wording “REAL:” Is Particularly Interesting. I Think It Is An Abbreviation For French “Réalisation”, Meaning Essentially Executed/Made By. So The Inscription Probably Means “Réalisation: Nevens M., Lot”—I.E. Made/Executed By M. Nevens Of Lot. That Fits Exceptionally Well: Contemporary Sources Specifically Describe Nevens As Working From His Atelier In Lot. Nevens Was Not An Obscure Hobbyist. He Won First Prize For A Stained-Glass Window For The 1958 Brussels World Exhibition, Produced Major Architectural Stained Glass In Belgium, And Received Commissions Abroad. His Documented Work Includes Churches As Well As Smaller Commissions For Private Houses, Schools, Restaurants And Other Buildings. There Is One Important Wrinkle: “REAL: NEVENS M.” May Indicate Execution Rather Than Design. There Are Documented Nevens Windows Where Maurits Supplied The Design And Someone Else Executed It—For Example, A 1974 Church Window Is Explicitly Described As “Dessin Maurits Nevens, Réalisation Herman Nevens.” So We Shouldn’t Automatically Assume Nevens Designed The Composition Merely From This Inscription.
