Product description
Reissue by Giso of a Philips Art Deco lamp from the 1930s. Opal glass. Incandescent bulbs up to 40W. Also suitable for LED and energy saving bulbs. Fitting 1 time E27 (large socket). Designer: ? Manufacturer: Philips Netherlands Type: School lamp Dimensions: H 67 cm diam. Sphere: 32 cm Year: '30 Material: Brass-Opaline Number: 1 Philips' Philite factory: In 1923 Philip started small-scale production of Bakelite, but this was not allowed to be done under the name Bakelite. Hence Philips' thermoset plastic was called PHILITE. This was done for the purpose of sleeves for electron tubes. Later for numerous applications such as housings, knobs and so on. In 1929 a new large factory was built. Work was done in 3 shifts. The high investment in presses and dies made it necessary to work 24 hours a day. In 1930, about 750 people were employed. However, the great crisis also struck the Netherlands and by 1933 only 450 employees remained. Philips was the largest plastic manufacturer in the Netherlands until 1945. During the war years it was forbidden by the German occupier to produce radios on a large scale. The factory turned to bakelite door fittings and toilet seats. In 1952, a new factory was opened for this purpose. The main raw material for Philite (=Fenol) was obtained from the State Mines. At that time 1100 people worked in the Philite plant. The manufacture of thermoplastics, which emerged around that time, was never undertaken by Philips on a large scale. Today Philips no longer has any Philite factories. The hanging lamp: Lamp was produced in the early 1930s by The PHILITE factory of Philips for schools, among others. The pendant lamp still has the classic brass cover, attached to it is a brass tube. On the brass tube is a milk white opaline glass shade attached by means of a clamping system. The milky white opaline glass shade creates a diffuse light effect. Condition: Lamp is in good original condition.
