Product description
A remarkable bronze Buddha statue from Thailand, dating to the 17th to early 18th century, during the Ayutthaya period. The stylized facial features, the tightly arranged hair curls, and the high flame-shaped ushnisha are consistent with the later U-Thong C-form style. Buddha is seated in virasana on a simply profiled plinth. The right hand reaches towards the earth in bhumisparsha mudra, while the left hand rests palm upwards in the lap. This gesture refers to the moment when the earth was called upon as a witness to the enlightenment. The copper-rich bronze alloy bears remnants of a layered gold-colored finish over a brown, craquelure lacquer-like underlayer. The dark patina, localized greenish-blue copper compounds, and ochre-colored deposits give the surface a distinct archaeological character. The sharp macro photographs show the structure around the hair curls and the natural wear up close. The underside preserves a substantial part of the historical casting core. Around the torso and lap, old cracking, loss, and encrustations are visible. These condition characteristics are integral to the history and appearance of the object; all sides, the underside, and relevant details have been extensively photographed.
