Product description
An exceptionally rare German dental instrument cabinet manufactured by Arnold Biber of Pforzheim, dating from the early 20th century, circa 1920.
Originally designed as professional equipment for a dental practice, this remarkable cabinet combines highly specialized functionality with an extraordinary architectural and sculptural presence. Its sophisticated construction reflects an important period in the development of professional medical furniture, when traditional cabinetmaking was increasingly combined with precision metalwork and ingenious mechanical solutions.
The cabinet features an impressive arrangement of glazed upper compartments, enclosed lower storage sections and a central work surface. Its most distinctive feature is the remarkable system of pivoting, fan-shaped instrument trays, positioned symmetrically on either side of the central section. Each tray swings independently outward, originally allowing convenient access to dental instruments and creating a striking sculptural composition when fully opened.
The elegant white finish, glass shelving and extensive polished metal fittings, hinges and hardware give the cabinet a distinctive appearance that strongly reflects its original clinical purpose. Refined architectural details, including the moulded cornice and carefully proportioned panelled doors, further emphasize the quality and sophistication of its construction.
The history of its manufacturer is particularly noteworthy. Arnold Biber founded a dental laboratory in Pforzheim in 1886. Following his death, the company was acquired by Dr. Fritz Winkelstroeter in 1908 and continued to operate under the established Arnold Biber name. From this period, the company began manufacturing complete dental practice equipment, including dental chairs, drilling machines and instrument cabinets. The business subsequently developed into Dentaurum, one of Germany's long-established dental manufacturers.Dentaurum
The cabinet has undergone a comprehensive professional restoration in our workshop, carried out with particular attention to preserving its historic character, original construction and distinctive mechanical details. The surfaces have been carefully restored and refinished in white, while the extensive metal fittings, hinges and mechanisms have been restored and polished. The mechanical elements are fully functional, and the cabinet presents beautifully both closed and with its remarkable instrument trays extended.
Today, beyond its original medical function, the cabinet would make an exceptional collector's cabinet, display cabinet, bar cabinet or statement piece in a sophisticated residential, hospitality or commercial interior.
Its combination of architectural form, ingenious mechanical construction and connection to the early development of professional dental equipment makes it a rare and highly decorative surviving example of early 20th-century German dental furniture.
A highly distinctive piece combining German craftsmanship, medical and industrial history, ingenious engineering and sculptural design.
