Born in 1917, Gérard Hofmann began his career as a painter before turning to ceramics. In Vallauris, he joined the Cérenne ceramics workshop as a decorator.
After 1959, Gérard Hofmann left Cérenne and opened his own workshop with his wife, Christiane, on the Route du Col de Saint Antoine in Vallauris. The couple produced functional ceramics and unique decorative pieces such as roller vases and mirrors. Their work was sold, among other places, at the ceramics shop "La Bergerie," founded by Françoise Azais.
He also worked with Fernand Léger in Biot.
