Ger Lataster is considered one of the Limburgers from Amsterdam, a group of abstract expressionist painters that also includes Jeff Diederen and Pieter Defesche. Inspired by the CoBrA movement and the expressionism of the pre-war German artist group Der Blaue Reiter, his style develops between 1946 and 1955 from a figurative expressionism to full abstraction. Later on, figurative and geometric elements sometimes appear again. Lataster's painting has enjoyed international recognition since the 1950s, and is not inferior in expressiveness to that of his contemporaries Asger Jorn, Karel Appel and Willem de Kooning. His style is in keeping with the lyrical abstraction, characterized by the expressive and emotional charge of color and a spontaneous, poetically moving brushwork.
