Product description
This atmospheric expressionist oil painting by the West Flemish artist Kathleen Storme brings a unique, layered ode to the city of Ghent by night. The work fabulously balances between Ghent's rich history – symbolized by the characteristic yellow-green drawbridge reminiscent of the historic Goudbrug – and present-day Ghent. The artist herself describes the canvas as a depiction of a deserted Gent by Night. Although the quays appear serene and empty, the painting exudes an intense vibrancy. The carefully placed 'holes of light' in the historic facades accentuate the warm life taking place indoors; inside it is cozy, outside peace reigns. At the bottom of the canvas, Storme subtly sets nature in motion with her characteristic, powerful palette knife technique. The lights from the quay reflect in the water, which gently sways under the influence of a sublime night wind. This play of reflections on the bank creates an absolutely fairytale-like, fairy atmosphere. As the ultimate poetic detail, a single lonely figure walks across the bridge: the silent witness to this magical moment, walking between yesterday and today. A powerful, richly textured and extremely atmospheric expressionist masterpiece that is an absolute eye-catcher in any interior, especially when the evening lighting plays with the thick layers of paint. • Artist: Kathleen Storme (Ostend) • Title / Theme: Gent by Night (A cross between the historic Goudbrug and present-day Ghent) • Technique: Oil on canvas (Powerful impasto / palette knife technique with thick texture) • Dimensions: 40 x 50 cm • Condition: Excellent condition, beautifully presented on a stretcher frame
