Gaston De Mey was born in 1933 in Kaprijke and died in 2015 in Eeklo.
De Mey studied at the Eeklo art academy. During this period, he mainly painted figuratively, but inspired by the flourishing avant-garde art, his focus gradually shifted to abstraction. From 1968 onwards, a radical break with the figurative can be observed in his oeuvre: from then on, letters form the basis of every artwork. Gaston De Mey dissects texts, names, and words and reduces them to their essence, namely letters. With these letters, he then creates entirely new compositions. Where De Mey initially connected the letters in a lyrical way, he eventually evolved towards geometric, abstract compositions. These geometric compositions are also characterized by a central mirror line. The abstraction also extends to his choice of materials: for example, he mainly uses white backgrounds on which the letters appear in black and grey-toned paint.
There is no point in looking for the words or texts that form the basis of De Mey's works: the intention is precisely to demonstrate the illegibility of the world with his art. Despite this pursued illegibility, De Mey still tries to bring a certain order. De Mey's work radiates a certain tranquility, despite the chaos of all the letters. In this sense, the world becomes a little more legible and comprehensible after all.
The work of Gaston De Mey can be found in the collections of museums such as Mu.Zee, the Groeningemuseum, the Muhka, the KMSK, the S.M.A.K and the FeliXartMuseum.
The frame around the painting deserves some attention and has some cracks here and there. The colors of the work are still very vibrant. If you look closer, you can see some scratches, smudges, and light stains, presumably from poor storage. In my opinion, this patina suits a work more than 50 years old.
