It is a beautiful example of Mid-Century minimalist design that builds upon the ideas of ‘De Stijl’ and ‘Bauhaus’.
Commissioned by Martin Visser, Friso Kramer designed this modern bookcase in 1953 for the Amsterdam department store De Bijenkorf, produced by Asmeta.
This cabinet is difficult to find, and this version with the small cabinet with doors is very rare.
The cabinet is modular, thus offering the possibility to arrange the shelves and colored panels in multiple ways.
In fact, this cabinet consists of 3 vertical units, each comprising 7 shelves joined together. Above these are another 3 units, each consisting of 2 shelves.
The cabinet in the photo is 269 cm high. Without the short uprights on top (the 2 top shelves), the cabinet is 193 cm high. The cabinet in the photo is 283 cm wide, but can be made narrower or wider by adding the short uprights to the sides.
Defects: For its time, the cabinet is in good condition. A few shelves have scratches, as can be seen in the photos. One shelf has some significant dents on the front. Almost all screws are original, except for a few. One short upright from the small cabinets above is missing.
