ProfessionalProduct description
Art Deco vase in Pâte de Verre by Pierre D'Avesn, created in the 1930s. The vase has a small chip on the rim, as shown in the photos. Additional images available upon request. Ø 16 cm h 21 cm Pierre d'Avesn (1901–1990/91) was a legendary French glassmaker and designer, one of the most significant figures of the Art Deco movement. He was the creative force behind some of the most iconic glass designs of the 20th century. He began his career at a very young age, just 14, as an apprentice to René Lalique. He stayed with him for about 10 years and was responsible for designing two of Lalique's most famous and expensive pieces. In 1926, he left Lalique to forge his own path; from 1930 to 1936, he was the artistic director of the pressed glass department (the Croismare glassworks). Here, he finally gained the right to sign his designs with his own name, "P. d'Avesn." He directed the Verlys glassworks from 1937 until the outbreak of World War II in 1940. After the war, he worked as a freelance artist and designer for these prestigious companies. His work is the quintessence of Art Deco elegance. He was a master of the "pressed glass" technique, which allowed for intricate relief textures to be created. He is highly regarded for his use of opalescent glass, which gives pieces a milky white-bluish "glow" that changes depending on the light. His designs often featured stylized fish (like the "Flying Fish" vase), birds, flowers, and bold geometric patterns.
