Product description
Very cool set of 6 male Atlas beetles (Chalcosoma atlas), a very large species of beetle in the family Scarabaeidae, found in Southeast Asia. Males have three prominent horns. The species is named after Atlas, the giant from Greek mythology who supported the heavens. These specimens are beautifully framed in a black frame with glass and lid, second half of the 20th century.
Chalcosoma atlas, like other beetles of the genus Chalcosoma, is remarkable for its size. As is common with Scarabaeidae, males are larger than females, reaching a length of approximately 60–120 millimeters, while females are approximately 25–60 millimeters. Males have specialized horns on their head and thorax which they use to fight each other to acquire mating rights with females.
This set is in very good vintage condition, the frame has an old, almost invisible repair, a small piece of a leg is missing from 1 beetle, otherwise in very good condition, check the photos for more details!
Dimensions: 37x37x6cm. Length of the largest beetle measures 10cm including the legs, 4cm wide.
Weight: 1.750kg.
