Product description
Large relief woodcut “La Chaise Bleue” (100 cm x 100 cm) by graphic artist Fon Klement (1930-2000). Produced in 1994 using his own relief printing method H.C. (hors commerce). Signed in pencil, dated, and bearing his two fingerprints in blue ink, numbered 110/125. The text ‘La Chaise Bleue’ is in pencil. Dimensions including frame with glass and passe-partout: 100 x 100 cm. The condition is excellent. First owner. La Chaise Bleue, the symbol of Nice, served as the inspiration for this artwork. Fon Klement (Amsterdam, 1930 - 2000) Fon Klement was a self-taught artist. After a brief period in which he gained recognition as a figurative painter and woodcutter, the first multi-color prints were created in 1960 using the technique of relief board cutting, so characteristic of him. Recognizable formal elements gradually gave way to more abstract motifs in a sober color palette. For Fon Klement, the later (re)discovery of the watercolor technique came at exactly the right time. Artistically speaking, he found himself at a crossroads. The need to change course was growing ever stronger. Fon Klement embarked on a quest and traveled through Provence for over ten weeks. In his improvised studio in Lorgues in southern France, they were there in abundance: flowers. Poppies, irises, roses, delphiniums, and hibiscus enticed the artist to continue on the path he had already embarked upon: painting and watercoloring floral still lifes. Since 1961, Fon Klement had been a member of Xylon, the international association of woodcutters, which regularly exhibits prints throughout Europe. The exhibition ‘Prints today in the USA’, featuring an overview of graphic art by Dutch artists including Fon Klement, toured the United States for years. During the ‘Grafiek Nu’ printmaking biennial in Laren (autumn 1990), and later at the first international printmaking biennial in Maastricht (summer 1993), Fon Klement was awarded the Audience Award. This painting hung in our living room and is now going to a new owner due to a move.
