Product description
This is a traditional folk art bridal chest, originating from Hungary and dated 1943. The piece is crafted from wood and serves as a significant example of mid-20th-century European vernacular furniture, distinguished by its vibrant, hand-painted decoration.
The chest is constructed from solid wood, with a natural, unfinished interior that reveals the grain. Its exterior is adorned with elaborate floral motifs, a characteristic of Hungarian folk art, rendered in a rich palette of red, green, blue, and yellow against a white background. The front panel prominently features the Hungarian coat of arms with the Holy Crown, centred above the date '1943'. The chest is fitted with its original iron side handles and a decorative lock escutcheon.
This piece retains its original painted surface, which has developed a distinct and authentic patina over time. The wear is consistent with its age and history, contributing to its character without compromising its structural integrity. The interior provides ample, clean storage space.
As a functional and decorative object, this chest can be used as a blanket box at the foot of a bed, a unique coffee table, or a striking storage solution in a living area. Its colourful presence complements rustic, bohemian, or eclectic interior design schemes.
